little brown church

Does anyone have a picture of the Little Brown Church other than those on their site? I am contemplating getting married there, but it is quite a drive. Anyone who went disappointed at the building and the area? Or is it the ideal place?

little brown church

The town where the church is located, is pretty small. The location of the church is nothing special. The inside is nice, but really no different than any older church. Sorry, I don%26#39;t have a picture. I know a few people that have been married there. It%26#39;s your day, it will be great wherever you go. Have fun!

little brown church

My husband and I stopped there last summer. The location will be what you want it to be...a simple country church or a magical place...... We%26#39;re from Minnesota and happen to live in an area that has many small, rural churches so it wasn%26#39;t much different than many we%26#39;d been in. The difference comes in the significance you attach to the song. Otherwise, it%26#39;s a pleasant area, there%26#39;s a nice yard to the side of the church, and there%26#39;s a parking lot (dirt) across the street. We enjoyed our visit and learned more about the history of the church. It was a very pleasant experience and we%26#39;re glad we detoured to see it.

Please, put away the bridal magazines and focus on the commitment you%26#39;re about to make and the setting that will make it meaningful.

This church is an ideal place to be for visitation or to get married. This is not a little brown church anymore in fact it has undergone expansion in 03-04. The church now has paved parking, improved handicap accessibility, larger gathering area for social events, modern kitchen/cooking area, and more rooms to educate the catholic youth. Yet the St Patricks church in Nevada has kept its buty as it was when it was a little church.

My wife and I stopped on our trip east. The pine forest area in back of the wooden church is peaceful. I like small town areas so it has the rural appeal. I would recomment a detour. For a small wedding under 50 persons, it would be quaint. I have no photos to share. Small white churches in Iowa are a gem to save. So many new brick churches are being built now .

Interior pictures can be found at littlebrownchurch.org. The last wedding I attended was in 1986 and it was very nice. Considering there is a wedding every 30 minutes during summer months, the ceremony did not feel rushed and when the happy couple went to the back of the Church to ring the bell together afterwards while the minister told them about having to pull together to make a marriage work ---- goose bumps!!

My husband and I were married there January 24, 2002. It was nice. The church is simple but nice. My In-laws were married there some 27 years ago. That is why we went for it. We figured if they were able to stay married this long, we could to since this was both our second marriages.

They have a nice place to have the reception after the wedding.

It all depends on who you want at your wedding. If you are wanting friends and family to attend and you live as far away as Des Moines as I did, do not plan on a large attendance. The distance will chase people away from attending your wedding. It will be great where ever you decide to get married. You would enjoy the little brown Church, and I%26#39;m sorry but the only pictures of the churce I have are on a VHS Tape of our wedding that family filmed.

Hope your day is as wonderful as ours was. Good Luck.

The Little Brown Church in the Vale, nestled amongst the pine trees in Historic Bradford, IA is home to hundreds of weddings each year. I live close to the church, grew up here, learned to sing the song, ';The Little Brown Church in the Vale';; have been in weddings at the church, have been a soloist at the church, observed my parents%26#39; 50th wedding anniversary at the church, and feel I know it well. There%26#39;s a feeling of history and longevity that goes along with the church and its idealic rural Iowa setting. The weddings tend to be ';packages';...and you follow the prescribed regimen. You can be standing outside the church waiting to follow the group inside, so it can have that ';Vegas'; feel...so if you have a choice, pick a less busy time...not February 14th, or summer Saturdays. It is a brown church, painted that color because at the time of its construction during the Civil War, it was a color more easily obtained. Keep it simple and you%26#39;ll your experience if like history and an uncomplicated beginning. Remember it%26#39;s what happens in the following 50 years that counts!

I was married there %26amp; thought it was wonderful. We had 8 guests %26amp; it was perfect for us. We did drive to Clear Lake for dinner afterwards. If you contact the church, they have people who you can pay to help with your service....ie. florist, musicians. It is a small country church %26amp; for me it was perfect.

My husband and I have many pleasant memories of our wedding at The Little Brown Church over 43 years ago. This quaint, charming church is located in a beautiful, serene rural setting near the small town of Nashua in Chickasaw County, Iowa. I feel this Church is a perfect setting for those who wish a small, quiet wedding. Five years ago while traveling through Iowa, my husband and I decided to stop by to visit the church. Pastor Linda Myren was so gracious and invited us to ring the church bell we rang together the day of our wedding. On the first Sunday of August the congregation hosts an annual ';Celebration of Marriage,'; honoring all couples who have been married at the church and providing them with an opportunity to renew their wedding vows. This year the Church will be celebrating its 150th anniversary.

My wife and I visited the Little Brown Church three weeks ago after singing the song for many years. It was fantastic. I was so impressed when we arrived about 6 pm and there was a note telling any visitor to go on in and visit. It was not locked and we enjoyed touring the building. Very impressive.

Where did it go?

I moved from Des Moines in the mid eighties. We used to take the kids to Living History Farm out past West Des Moines. I%26#39;m coming back with my grandkids and wanted to take them there but I cannot locate it in any listings. Has it%26#39;s name changed?

Where did it go?

They have a website at http://www.lhf.org that you might want to check out. Living History Farms%26#39; address says that it is in Urbandale, IA.

Family Ideas

I am looking for family fun in Dubuque, we are coming for a wrestling tournament but would like to turn this into a small vacation. Any ideas for kids ages 4,5,6 would be helpful. We are staying at the Grand Harbor Resort, starting July 1st. Thanks.

Family Ideas

Right by the Grand Harbor is the River Museum. Your kids would probably enjoy that. It also has an aquarium. There is also a cable car on Bluff street that is fun to ride. There are also a couple of different places you could play miniature golf. Usually Grand Harbor has packages that include the River Museum, etc. Check with them.

Thanks, I think we will try those things! I appreciate your time!

How can i travel into Jefferson from Des Moines?

the only way to get there would be by rental car. Definitely not a cab, it%26#39;s a good 80 miles.

  • Family Friendly Hotel

Looking for a family friendly hotel with a pool and a play area for kids ranging in age from 2-6 years old. Will be spending the weekend while we go to the Lion King in April. Need some suggestions to help keep the kids entertained.

    Family Friendly Hotel

Take a look at the Adventureland Inn in Altoona, not that far from downtown. THey have a great in door what park.

    www.adventureland-usa.com/index.php鈥?/a>

    Family Friendly Hotel

Stay away from the pool at the Adventureland Inn at all costs! They add so many chemicals to the pool that it makes the children who swim in it sick and to get terrible rashes. Maybe it would be best to avoid the hotel altogether and stay somewhere else.

We will be seeing Lion King in March and are staying at the Embassy Suites by the river. Our kids are 4-9. It costs around $140 per night but the accomidations are really nice and the ready-to-cook breakfast is free everyday. That makes up for the cost difference. There is a really nice manager reception every evening for 2-3 hours and the food/drinks are free as well. We have three kids so the suites are nice for comfort. The river view is pretty and the corner rooms have more space. Reserve now for April. The pool is alright. The hotel has just been renovated and the zoo/places to eat are close by. Have fun.

We stay at Embassy Suites whenever we travel. You would be surprised how much a free really nice breakfast and free drinks in the evening help save money.

Embassy Suites is perfect. We%26#39;ve stayed there several times the past year and it is consistently an excellent experience. Pool, service, breakfast, rooms, and LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Make sure to stroll around East Village going toward the Capital building. The new restaurant at the State History museum is very good and kid friendly. They will enjoy some of the exhibits also.

great service at Fitness Sports in Des Moines

I took my son to get shoes for running and getting in shape for soccer. Never have we ever had better service and worked with a young man who actually cared about getting my son in the right shoe. He changed our views on what a shoe should provide. I will pass the word on to all the other parents.

great service at Fitness Sports in Des Moines

aren%26#39;t they great. They are all runners, that helps. My husband is a runner and that%26#39;s the only place he will go. They also have great deals on the shoes by the door (50% off)

    Dubuque Area - Destinations

Our kids are heading to Loras this summer and I%26#39;d like to head someplace two-three hours in the surrounding area of Dubuque for a few days.

We are not much of casino gamblers - more interested in golf, hiking, massage, great restaurants. Hotel, bed and breakfast, resort - it%26#39;s only for a few nights so price is not a huge issue. This is a rare experience for me so I want something really nice and special.

Does anyone have a destination that might work for us - we live in Chicago area so I%26#39;d like to explore someplace we have not been before.

    Thanks for any ideas.

You may check into different places in Galena, IL, or possible Amana, IA. You won%26#39;t necessarily find the big ';resort'; you are looking for, but both places have lots of interesting shopping, smaller hotels, and great restaurants. There would also be some great golfing available in both. The Amanas would probably be just about 2 hours SW of Dubuque, of course Galena is only about 30 minutes east.

The worst place I have ever stayed

    I found out if the Inn you stay at double charges you, there are no managers to complain and get the issues resolved. There is no company headquarters because each one is indenpendly owned. If they make a mistake on your bill you are just stuck with the over charges. In my case I was charged for 2 rooms at $91.00 and after several phone calls there is not one employee that knows how to resolve the issue. All the manager could say is ';I don%26#39;t know how to do that.';

The worst place I have ever stayed

Just wondering what the name of the hotel or motel that you are talking about.

Did you pay with a credit card? If so, dispute the charges with your credit card company.

  • Arnolds Park, IA.

    Help, Help,

My wife are heading to West Oaks Resort, in May of this year. We have never been there before and are wondering what there is to see and do in the area. (100 miles or so) Could anybody help us out? Or even what we can expect at the resort itself.

    Thanks,

    General_One

    Arnolds Park, IA.

Get ready for the quiet life. If you fish, hit the lake (beautiful blue, clear and cold this time of year.) If you read, bring some good books. You can also tour the lake on Queen Anne, a rehabed boat that gives you a nice view of pretty homes in this modest resort area.

    Sioux Falls, SD is about 100 miles away, but, I%26#39;d opt to enjoying a slower pace and explore nature around the lake instead of hitting the ';big city.';

Oh..also, there%26#39;s a boat museum nearby, too. Some modest restaurants and shopping, but, not quite the happening time of year there yet. (July 4, another story.)

I grew up about 30 miles away, so, I%26#39;m a little familiar with what%26#39;s in the area. There might be a website....

    Have fun!

    Arnolds Park, IA.

    Here%26#39;s a link

    http://www.arnoldspark.com/

The Arnolds Park/Okoboji/Spirit Lake area is a beautiful area. West Lake Okoboji is the only blue water/spring fed lake in the country. Right on the shore at Smith%26#39;s Bay on West Lake is Arnolds Park Amusement Park, considered the oldest amusement park west of the Mississippi River. There is also the oldest running running roller coaster in the country.

The Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum at the Park shows the nautical history of the Lakes and is home to the Iowa Navy.

You must ride the Queen II, as in ';2';, and not the Queen Anne, as in a previous post. The Queen will take you on a leisurely cruise of West Lake Okoboji complete with an ongoing commentary about the area.

It%26#39;s IMPOSSIBLE to describe what it is like in the area; one must experience it!

Enjoy your vacation...I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find it quite a destination!

You can also go to www.okoboji.com for information on this area.

good place to stay near I80

We will be coming home from a road trip to Yellowstone taking 80. We%26#39;ll be stopping at Green River,WY, then Ogallala,NE, and I figured we night stop next near Des Moines before heading into Chicago. I was wondering if you could tell me of anything (not far off of 80) we should see along the way? How about where to stay in the area? We will have 5 kids with us (aged 1 through 18) and I need something for them to look at or somewhere cool to stay or they%26#39;ll drive me crazy! LOL. Thanks!

good place to stay near I80

    Bobann....

As a business traveller, I%26#39;ve stayed in Des Moines frequently over dthe past few years. Since I travel on business, I%26#39;m not going to be much help with the tourist attractions...but I might be able to help you out a little with where to stay.

If you%26#39;re looking at Des Moines, most of the better lodging and dining establishments are on the west side of town....the suburbs of Clive and Urandale to be exact. I%26#39;m a Marriott Platinum frequent guest, so I%26#39;m baised toward that chain. The full service Marriott West is just off I-80 at exit 121 or 122, if memory serves. You%26#39;ll come upon this just before the junction with I-35. Its a good hotel and it can be quite a bargain on weekends. Nice restaurant on-premises, and several fast food places nearby.

A few miles closer in...right after the I-35 junction (so keep in the right lane) are the Marriott Courtyard and Fairfield Inn...along with several other hotels/motels including a nice Holiday Inn. These places are a little closer to a wide array of restaurants and shopping than the full-service Marriott. The Holiday Inn has a Damon%26#39;s (Ribs) on-premises. Otherwise, you%26#39;ll find the usual array of familiar chains nearby (Applebee%26#39;s, Outback, etc.).

If you want to go about another hour and a half beyond Des Moines, you can%26#39;t beat the Amana Colonies. There%26#39;s a large, uniquely designed Holiday Inn right at exit 225 and a couple of other hotels nearby (a Days Inn and a Super 8 if I%26#39;m not mistaken). The Amana colonies themselves are worth the 10-minute trip. However, if you don%26#39;t have the time or inclination, there are a few Amana shops across the parking lot from the Holiday Inn....and the Holiday Inn itself has a good Amana-style German restaurant. Very nice large indoor pool in the hotel also.

20 miles beyond Amana and you%26#39;re in Iowa City. As a Marriott guy, I%26#39;m partial to the Fairfield Inn at Exit 242. There are several other hotels in the area along with loads of dining and shopping options.

Hope this helps. Have a safe and fun trip!

good place to stay near I80

Of of I80 at Hwy 6 in the western part of Des Moines there is a Comfort Suites and a Sleep Inn. There is also a good resturant called The Iowa Machine Shed with ';Iowa dishes';. Both hotels are fairly new and have nice Indoor Pools and decent continental breakfasts. If you have the time, see Living History Farms right next door. It is a hands on museum that has three different types of working farms.

I%26#39;ve lived here all my life and I would definetly agree to stay on the west side of town. The Marriott as posted above in WEst Des Moines is wonderful, as are the four or so hotels around it. The indoor pool at the Marriot West is fabulous and the restuarant in the hotel is wonderful too. They are close to the new Jordan Creek Mall which has a number of restaurants and shops that are new to the Des Moines area.

I would also reccommend anything around the University/Clive exit too which is right off of I-80 and also close to Living History Farms which will be a hit for your smaller children.

    Thanks so much!!

The Field of Dreams is in Dyersville Iowa-cool!

The Living History Farms are a MUST see - especially for the kids. You can%26#39;t beat a meal at the Machine Shed next door.

    Thanks!

So I want to know where you ended up staying and you would stay there again?

We ended up staying at the Newton Inn. I can%26#39;t remember the exit number, but I can look it up on the map later. Right now I just remember that it was in Newton,IN, I think 3 exits or so past Des Moines. We were running late, so we didn%26#39;t have time for sightseeing. It was nothing fancy, but it was great for the kids. They have a great pool, a putting green, game room, pool tables, good breakfast, bar, nice people. Best of all, we got two connecting rooms for $100. I have to run now to take the little ones to Kiddie Land to see Sponge Bob, so let me know if you need any info. When I get home later, I%26#39;ll kick the teenagers off the machine so I can answer.

Help! We need FUN-FUN things to do when we visit Keokuk this summer and possibly again early fall 2006! What is there to do in this fair city with two teenagers, a boy 14 and a girl 16? what to do in Iowa?

We are traveling up from Missouri next week and would like to know what there is to do in Iowa. Not sure of our route so any suggestions would be appreciated. We enjoy old museums, ships, boats, ect.

    Any good scrapbooking stores?

    what to do in Iowa?

Old museums, ships, boats....sounds like a trip through Iowa along the Mississippi.....all of the larger ';river towns'; have museums, etc. I live near Dubuque - the have the brand new Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium and right next to it is the William H Black - an old working riverboat (I can%26#39;t remember exactly what kind right off hand though....). It is also neat to go up in to Eagle Point park in Dubuque and watch boats pass through the lock and dam there. The Grand Harbor resort in Dubuque would be a good overnight stop - indoor waterpark - great if you have kids - right next to riverboat casino if you don%26#39;t have kids.....

I know there are more river-related attractions in Davenport and Clinton too, but I am not as familiar with them.

As for scrapbooking - there are good store in the Quad Cities, Dubuque and the Cedar Rapids and Des Moine areas. Figure out exactly where you will be going and I will give you more details based on your route.

Coffee Shops in Des Moines Suburbs

I will be visiting in mid-June. I was wondering of a unique and independent coffee house in the areas of West Des Moines, Clive, Urbandale (West Metro).

Coffee Shops in Des Moines Suburbs

There is Java O%26#39;s on University Ave. on the WDM/Clive border (maybe a mile west of I 80/35). I believe it%26#39;s an independent and it has a nice, upscale ambiance. There%26#39;s also a Grounds for Celebration near 48th and Mills Pkwy. in WDM. I haven%26#39;t been there myself yet, but hear that it%26#39;s nice. The other coffee houses I%26#39;m aware of are chains (Caribou, Starbucks, Scooters). I have seen a few drive through coffee kiosks in strip malls, but I assume you%26#39;re seeking a sit-down place. Enjoy your trip!

Coffee Shops in Des Moines Suburbs

As a long term Iowan, I can assure you that the places listed below are your cookie cutter coffee houses. If you want something truly unique, your best bet would be taking a 10 minute drive to Java Joe%26#39;s - located in downtown Des Moines. This coffee shop is very fun and unique- usually a younger crowd but always a few older adults. Most weekends they also have bands, and the coffee isnt bad either.

I second the Jave Joe%26#39;s suggestion, but if you are intent on staying in the suburbs, my vote goes to Java G%26#39;s on University in Clive.

Thank you all for your input. I will be in town this weekend for the political conventions downtown, and will probably get to enjoy Java Joes ( I have been here before, it is a great coffeehouse!!). My hotel is in Urbandale, so I can probably make a trip to Java G%26#39;s ( I thought there was a coffehouse off of 128th and University but wasn%26#39;t 100% sure).

  • cog rail

There is a city north of Davenport, IA on the Mississippi with a cog rail or a type of cog left that one can ride to the top of the hill for a view of the river. Does anyone know about this town and the name.

    thanks

    cog rail

Dubuque? The is an incline called Fenelon Place.

    cog rail

Not Dubuque - the one previous poster mentioned is simply the Bluff Street Elevator -it is not a railroad at all. It does take you to the top of the hill and would have good view of river, but probably not what you are thinking of. The ride to the top would be less than 10 minutes and then comes right back down.

    Where to Stay?

I am planning on taking my mother and 3 yr old son to Amana in October for 2 days. Any recommendations on where to stay that%26#39;s somewhat budget-friendly ? Thanks for your help!

    Where to Stay?

Not sure if it will fit into the ';budget friendly'; category, but there is a Holiday Inn in Little Amana (right on Interstate 80) that has an indoor waterpark that your 3 year old would love. It is maybe a 10 mintue drive to main Amana.

    Where to Stay?

There is a Super 8 and Econo Lodge in Little Amana (off 1-80) at the same exit as the Holiday Inn. 5 miles west of there at the Williamsburg exit there is another Super 8, Best Western and a Days Inn. There is a Tanger Outlet mall at this exit and numerous fast food dining options.

I am not sure of the price, but Main Amana has a motel called the Guest Haus Motor Lodge.

I don%26#39;t see any postings about Anamosa or the National Motorcycle Museum.

    Anyone been? Input??

    Thanks. :o)

The National Motorcycle Museum is well worth your time to stop and visit! It is right on the main street through town. Also, if you are in to motorcycles, you have probably heard of J %26amp; P Cycles. Their main location (with showroom) is right on the edge of Anamosa on Hwy 151. Both have websites so you can check them out a little before your trip here.

Critters at night....depends on your luck. You definitely need to keep your eyes peeled for them, but you may be lucky and never see them too. Depending on the route you take from Dyersville to Maquoketa.....if using the ';back'; county roads (which are definitely more scenic) you will definitely want to be alert. However, if you are simply going to take hwy 20 to dubuque and then down 61 to maquoketa, you would have less chance of critter action.

Just out of curiosity, how you end up choosing Iowa to tour?

Thanks Iowagymmom... see my other reply on ';travelling thru Iowa';. :o)

    Hi IAgymmom,

My Iowa ride is sanctioned by the Iron Butt Association, a group dedicated to long distance motorcycling. It%26#39;s called a Saddle Sore 1000, which is 1000 miles to be ridden within 24 hours. (Don%26#39;t choke, it%26#39;s entirely possible. I%26#39;ve done it many times, and it%26#39;s safe when done properly.) For this ride I chose to create an all-Iowa route, because we visit family in Des Moines every year and I like Iowa. I%26#39;ll be riding my bike out from California just so I can complete the Iowa 1000. And we%26#39;re going to squeeze in a visit to the State Fair too. How Iowa can you get? :)

As to my specific question, I am riding down the river from Lansing, then heading to Dyersville in order to avoid Dubuque (too many stoplights in Dubuque.) I had originally planned on taking 136 south to 64 east to 61 south. But after reading your post it seems I might be better off taking 20 east to 61 south (using some county roads behind the Dubuque airport.) Is that a good way to go to make good time and still minimize the critter factor? And do you have any knowledge of the rest of that ride, 61 south to Fort Madison and 2 west to Decatur City?

    Thanks.

  • traveling thru Iowa

We are planning on driving thru the eastern side of Iowa on our way back from the mall of america to Chicago. Just thought I%26#39;d ask if there are any must see sights on our way home. We have a teenage son and do plan on stopping to see the field of dreams spot. Thanks for any help.

    OhioTrav

    traveling thru Iowa

If you are going to the Field of Dreams, also stop in Dubuque to see the National Mississippi Museum and Aquarium. Lots of interactive exhibits.

    traveling thru Iowa

Take the drive along the Mississippi R. Much of time you are real close and you can see the many locks and dams.

Also big sport shop in Prairie du Chien, WI. Effigy Mounds NP in Iowa across river also interesting.

The Amana Colonies are great, but it is more of a destination for adults, than for teen boys.

Thanks for the input. Looking forward to seeing some of Iowa!!

I would plan on following the River as closely as you can - the most scenic lookouts, etc. are all along the River. If nature is your thing, you could stop at Effigy Mounds near McGregor, Pikes Peak State Park in the same area, there is also a ferry across the river from near Millville, IA to Cassville, Wisconsin, you could then drive down the Wisconsin side to Dubuque and cross back into Iowa there. The Field of Dreams would be a a half hour drive or so from Dubuque. Also if interested, there is a huge Cabelas store in Prairie Du Chien that might be a fun stop for you.

Where is the Field of Dreams? Thanks.

Where is the Field of Dreams? Thanks.

bostonoski - saw your other post about your motorcycle trip - the Field of Dreams is in Dyersville - one of the towns you mentioned traveling through.

What other sites are you looking for? I live about 15 miles from Dyersville, and Maquoketa is old stomping grounds so I am pretty familiar with this area. Let me know if you need any further info.

    Thanks Iowagymmom,

Wow it is VERY difficult to post on this site with what is essentially a dial-up wireless access modem.

I am returning from SD to Quad Cities... I am in northeast Nebraska and thought I would drive straight out to Anamosa, camp at the state park nearby, see the motorcycle museum, then head south to Amana Colonies and Herbert Hoover%26#39;s library. I have only two days, and thought about the Field of Dreams too, but the other three are more appealing (Hoover library is a must for me).

Any more suggestions?? My 2nd night camping will be near Amana, there are several choices there.

Bostonoski - depending on what time of day you get to the Museum in Anamosa and how long you are there (I do recommend a stop at J %26amp; P Cycles too as the owner has some very interesting bikes on display); the Field of Dreams in Dyersville is only about a 45-50 minute trip from Anamosa.

Also, on another thread you mention a route from Dyersville toward Hwy 61......you mentioned S on 136 to 64 to 61. That would be a more scenic route for sure. South on 136 would take you within one block of my house in Cascade! As far as Iowa scenery, that would be a much better route than 20 to 61. In fact, even better than taking 136 all the way to 64 would be to turn off off 136 on to county road E17. That would take you right to Maquoketa (and hwy 61) and the scenery is beautiful. It is kind of a %26#39;ridge%26#39; road that take you right by Maquoketa Caves State Park (camping available).

I am little confused answering your two posts, but if you are coming from NE (across I80?), you would be better off stopping at the Hoover Library first, heading through Amana, then to Anamosa and maybe Field of Dreams.

Maybe it would be easiest if you started a new thread. Tell me exactly where you will be coming in to Iowa, the sites you want to be sure to see and where you eventually need to end up (quad cities heading S on 61?).

  • Best Hotel

I am going to start traveling to the West Des Moines area more now for business during the week. What would be the top rated hotel for a single female traveler? I definately need a place that has high speed internet, etc.

    Best Hotel

I would highly recommend the Country Inn and Suites in Clive. It is a very nice hotel that would certainly meet your needs. A continental breakfast including both hot and cold items is served each morning. The hotel has a decent sized indoor pool and has clean, affordable rooms. There are many restaurants nearby, as well as two shopping centers. Just to let you know, the hotel does have free high speed internet access in the guest rooms. Please consider staying at the Country Inn and Suites. Hope this helps.

    Best Hotel

I second the Country Inn and Suites. I recommend it to people all the time. They will treat you very well. If you like Mexican food El Rodeo right by the hotel is good too.

If you want something closer to some shopping there is a Residence Inn right next to Jordan Creek Mall which is a brand new mall

Have you tried the New Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines? It%26#39;s awesome, its only been opened for a couple months, and it%26#39;s right next to the New Jordan Creek mall, the new Target and the new Super Wal-mart.

It has great hot breakfast that is made to order and they have two pool areas, one for the little kids which is great for families. Awesome fitness center and hot tub area.

You feel like your family when you walk in and it%26#39;s safe and they have awesome customer service.

    Good luck with your travels.

To note, I have had much, much better experiences at the Hampton Inn and the Fairfield Inn in West Des Moines. I would definitely recommend those two hotels instead.

I would recommend the Country Inn %26amp; Suites because its a new building than both the Hampton and Fairfield. It features a huge indoor pool and the staff is excellent!!!!!! It is very professionally managed and is priced better than the Hilton.

Had a kick A** Time in Nevada I.A.

Just wanted to post a quick note to say I am from Wisconsin and just recently went to visit my aunt and cousins in Nevada I.A. Well I had a most wonderful time, we stayed at my aunts house in nevada and also were in town for the Iowa state Fair which was also trully amazing. I cant say enough how helpful and king Iowians can be I would go out each morning on my aunts front porch to have my morning cigarette and there was always at least one or two passerbys that would greet me and say high.

I was also impressed by the mere size of the state faie in Des moines ( a much larger affair than the state fair here in Wisconsin) We spent the better part of a Saturday at the fair the only sdmall complaint I did have was the cost of both the rides, as well as the food and drinks. I guess though you pay that just about anywhere though. Lastly I was travelling to Nevada from green Bay W.I. and I was just wondering what routes some others have taken. I really did love the ride especially when we hit the Mighty Mississippi River the scenerary was udderly breathtaking. I just wanted to say Thank You Iowians for a splendid vacation and your down home hospitatilty it was a wonderful experince that I shall cherish for many many years to come.

Oh I also wanted to plug Nilanns resturant on the Lincoln Highway (I am sure I am spelling it incorrectly SORRY) probablly the best breakfast I have had in quite some time. I certainlly recomend eating there if you get the chance.

Had a kick A** Time in Nevada I.A.

I live in San Diego, CA now, but I still my beloved Nevada. A town there the worse vandalism incident includes TP%26#39;ing, a lifted car hood will cause 6 people to ask if you need a ride or a mechanic, travelers can find directions anywhere, and women still thwap their kids with a purse if they dont hold the door for the little old lady behind them. If you read this and are headed that way, have a bite and Snacktime and tell Eddy and Big Eddy Miranda sent you. My sister will be at Ben Franklin%26#39;s on the weekend, if you need anything.

  • Villisca Axe Murder House

    July 29,2006

A visit here, gives one the feeling that someone or something still lives within this dwelling. There is a heavy feeling upon entering this home. Many stories evolve around this horrible incident. This

would be a must visit for the serious paranormal investigator. Am planning a return visit in the near future. Do spirits abound here?

    Check it out for yourself.

    Villisca Axe Murder House

The house IS eerie. I went through it after seeing the documentary ';Villisca: Living with a Mystery';--it is all about the Villisca axe murders. The house in Villisca was even more haunting to me because I had just seen the complete history and who really committed the murders. The house is a must see, and so is the documentary about the Villisca axe murders!

  • Motel for KIDS

Searching the Des Moines area for a motel for a family get-away. Looking for a FUN pool, we loved Adventureland Inn a few years back but reading all the testimonys I%26#39;m a little afraid to take young children there because of the chemicals. Last year we went to the Wildwood Lodge, but was disappointed in the pool. Any suggestions?

    Motel for KIDS

The Embassy Suites in Des Moines is a very good value and is especally ideal for families. The rooms are larger than most standard hotel rooms and you can%26#39;t beat the free cooked-to-order breakfast and two hour manager%26#39;s reception at night with drinks and snacks anywhere else. They have an indoor pool and the hotel was just redone in 2005. Feel free to check out their webpage at …hilton.com/en/es/hotels/index.jhtml… Do be aware that there is a $6 fee for parking at this hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel and think that your family would enjoy staying there.

    Motel for KIDS

You should look into staying at the hilton garden inn in west des moines. it%26#39;s right across the street from the new jordan creek mall and all of the great restaraunts. their pool area is amazing! they have a large adult pool, a separate kiddy pool, and also a hot tub all in the same large area! my family and I loved the whole stay and already booked another reservation to go back!

My cousins loved the pool at the Country Inn %26amp; Suites in Clive. It is one of the largest in the area. The hotel is very family oriented and even has a package this summer that has a goodie bag for the kids when they check in. I think it had swimming goggles in it. Very good value!!!

My suggestion is to try the New Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines lowa. It%26#39;s only been opened for four months. They have two great pool areas, and adult size pool, and then one for the little ones that is fensed off, plus a great work out facility and hot tub.

The rooms are set up that you can have a suite room where the parents can be in one room, and the kids in the other. It%26#39;s awesome!

They are also located right across from the New Jordan Creek Mall, New Super Wal-mart, and Super Target. Great customer service too. And to top that off, a hot breakfast that is made to order and kids under 12 are free. They even made micky mouse pancakes. The kids loved them.

    Good luck.

Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston. All done in a country lodge style with an awesome indoor swim through to outdoor pool area. Have a bunkbed suite with your own hot tub where the whole family can comfortably stay. Free continental breakfast. They are just off of I-80 just past the Merle Hay Mall exit. Easy to get to Merle Hay, Valley West or Jordan Creek Malls. Restaurants and grocery stores nearby. The pool area can not be beat - we hadn%26#39;t seen anything to compare in many years.

    Visiting Iowa City

Hi. I am visiting Iowa City for an interview on October 2. Because of the football game, the only room I can get for Saturday night is either a hotel a few miles north of Cedar Rapids airport, or a hotel in Muscatine.

As I do not know the area at all, is one area better/cleaner/safer than the other for Saturday night? Sunday night I have a room at the Sheraton in Iowa City.

    Thanks

    stu

    Visiting Iowa City

I think the one by the CR airport would be better. That is probably only a 20 minute trip to Iowa City. Muscatine would not be convenient at all.

    Visiting Iowa City

I%26#39;m from Iowa City and lived there until 5 years ago. I would definitely stay at a hotel north of CR airport. I think it%26#39;ll be a lot closer and more convenient. It%26#39;s not too far off I-380 which turns into Hwy. 218 after it crossed I-80. So then you have the option of shooting right into IC on either 281 or 80 depending on your destination. Muscatine seems a lot farther to me, we rarely went that direction. Just avoid southeast Cedar Rapids which can be a little rough.

Driving f/KC to Minneapolis w/toddlers. Any stops in IA?

My mom and I are driving from Kansas City to Minneapolis this summer with a 4 year-old and 5 1/2 year-old. We%26#39;re thinking the 8 hour drive may be too much (for all of us!) Any good overnight stopping points on that drive? We probably just need a fun family hotel with a pool and decent dinner.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Driving f/KC to Minneapolis w/toddlers. Any stops in IA?

The Wildwood Lodge is right off of I-35 and walking distance to restaurants (across the street). Depending on how long you want to stay there is also an aquatic center about 1/4 mile from the hotel.

Living in Des Moines, the first thing that comes to mind is the Adventureland Inn in Altoona. It would be about halfway for you and the hotel has a nice indoor pool. Food wise, there are plenty of opportunities in Altoona or nearby in Des Moines.

If you do this again next summer, Story City would be a great option. It%26#39;s a small community, right off I-35, north of Ames, has an antique carousel open for rides in the summer, newer Comfort Inn with pool, factor outlet mall, upscale restaurant (www.cottageonbroad.com), all of which are basically on the same street or visible from the same street, easy to navigate, low key but nice.

Thanks to all of you. We did end up pushing on through w/out an overnight stop. But as my sister will probably never leave MSP, I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll make the drive next summer! We did eat lunch in Ames at a local brewery/restaurant. Can%26#39;t remember the name. Pretty good. Also visited a really cute toy shop on the old main street.

best residential and school areas in and around Des Moines

Please give me a idea as to which are the best and residential as well as school areas for settling down with a family in Des Moines.

Housing should be reasonable . Good schools a priority.

best residential and school areas in and around Des Moines

    Nausheen -

See the post directly below yours - there%26#39;s quite a discussion on where to move to in the Des Moines area.

best residential and school areas in and around Des Moines

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have tried to surf the net for some idea on residential properties in Waukee and Urbandale.

However, I have no idea how to find out how reasonable the property tax is on single family properties with 4+ beds.

    Thank you much,

    nuasheen

I believe the polk county assessors office has property info online - this may tell you about property tax amounts for different areas.

    Nausheen:

The Polk and Dallas Co. assessors have web sites with tax information. Taxes can vary within a single community. For example, Urbandale has quite a few tax rates depending on which school district encompasses the property. If the web sites don%26#39;t help, you may want to call the assessors%26#39; offices to discuss the situation. Coming from New Jersey, I think you%26#39;ll find the taxes to be lower overall, housing to be inexpensive, auto insurance rates to be much lower and the quality of most of the schools to be comparable with the well-funded northern NJ suburban schools. Here are some sites to check: data.dmregister.com/gradrates/index.php,

It sounds as though you%26#39;re looking at housing in the western suburbs; you%26#39;ll find that many people have strong opinions about the best schools, best communities, etc. From an objective perspective, in the Johnston/western Urbandale/ Clive/Waukee/West Des Moines area the communities are very similar and there isn%26#39;t really much true difference among them.

Best of luck! I moved here one year ago and hope you enjoy the Des Moines area as much as I do!

Hi. We are visiting Iowa again this year from 19 Oct to 4 Nov. If you know of any events, concerts etc that are on within a day or so of Iowa City we%26#39;d really appreciate it if you could let us know about them.

In Iowa mid Oct to 4 Nov. Any events we should not miss?

Hi Johnlogie. I live in Davenport and suggest that you check out the events and concerts that will be at The Mark in Moline, IL. Moline is right next to us, across the Mississippi River. We are less than an hour from Iowa City. The Mark website has some concerts listed but don%26#39;t know what you are interested in. See www.themark.org and www.ticketmaster.com/venue/49264 for information.

In Iowa mid Oct to 4 Nov. Any events we should not miss?

You might also want to try www.hancher.uiowa.edu for the performance venue in Iowa City and th e Adler http://www.riverctr.com/broadway.html there is also Chicago where many concerts events happen and Chicago is only 4 hours west of Iowa city. DesMoines and Ames are in the center of the state and aare about 3-4 hours from Iowa City as well. If you are looking for historic events DesMoines Living History Farm usually has activities http://www.lhf.org/. For concerts ticketmaster is a good choice just type in the region or town: Chicago or Davenport etc and it will give you a listing. http://www.chicagotraveler.com has a nice listing of concerts events etc. A good place to eat in Chicago with a nice view is the Signature at the Top of the Hancock. For real traditional American Fare try Culvers in Iowa City or Davenport. For more relaxing time try the Amana Colonies near Iowa City.

    Hi Johnlogie,

If you are wanting the best steak of your life, you should plan a trip to Rube%26#39;s Steakhouse while in Iowa. There are two locations - one near Des Moines and one in the small town of Montour, only 75 minutes W/NW of Iowa City. It is a grill-your-own restaurant with a casual yet cozy ambience that encourages great conversation around the grill. The wine and beer lists are excellent, and the meat is the best quality, most scrumptious, tender cuts and generous portions you%26#39;ll ever find. I%26#39;ll be glad to give you directions if you are interested!

You could spend a day at Carroll%26#39;s Pumpkin Farm in Grinnell - very fun, no matter what your age is and then head to either Rube%26#39;s location for a great steak. There is also a casino about 3 miles from the Montour location, if you are interested. Not my thing to do, but thought I%26#39;d let you know.

There are many concerts, plays and festivals going on the weekend of 10/21 in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area. You can also log on to gazetteonline.com for info about area events.

There are also several parks in the area with beautiful foliage. Kent Park, just a few miles west of Iowa City on HWY 6 is a nice, smaller park with a few hiking trails and picnic spots.

Enjoy your trip to the great state of Iowa!

Try a breakfast or lunch at Snacktime in Downtown. Eddie is a wonderful cook, and its a good place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. One of the few places that you CAN smoke indoors, but it isnt a haze

    Principal Park - Iowa Cubs

    Hi,

I%26#39;m considering coming in to Des Moines at the end of June to catch a couple of games. Any hotel recommendations near the park?

    Thanks in advance.

    Principal Park - Iowa Cubs

Embassy Suites on the river, for top of the line there are the suites of 800 locust.

    Principal Park - Iowa Cubs

The Holiday Inn Downtown is great. They have free parking and offer complimentary shuttle service to and from the stadium.

depending on what you want, Holiday Inn is very old. Check out the Suites at 800 Locust (that is the name) http://www.800locust.com/

very nice and not real expensive. It%26#39;s also closer and you could walk to the game rather than messing with parking.

    Dave,

If you haven%26#39;t come to Des Moines yet. Check out the New Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines. It%26#39;s awesome, it%26#39;s next to Jordan Creek Mall, Super Target and the new Super Wal-mart.

They have two pools, fitness center and hot tub along with made to order breakfast.

Have fun at the ball park.

Thanks. Actually my trip was postponed. I still hope to get there before the end of the season.

I made a trip to Des Moines last year to catch the I-Cubs take on the Nashville Sounds, who are the Brewers AAA affiliate. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Jordan Creek Towne Center Campus. Very, very, very clean place. The Jordan Creek Towne Center is a neat shopping center. I ate at Joe%26#39;s Crab Shack. We don%26#39;t have one of those here in the Madison area.

It%26#39;s a very easy drive to the stadium from West Des Moines. A lot of Iowa residents complain about the traffic, but traffic was nothing, even compared to Madison standards. I like downtown Des Moines, although there was a lot of vacant storefronts. Iowa drivers are very good. My only complaint was with parking. I don%26#39;t know how many big trucks took up 2 parking stalls in the parking ramp. Too many to count.

The stadium itself is okay, but a little bit old. However, there are lots of friendly people, and not a bad seat in the house. My only complaint was outside the stadium on the river walk. The river walk is nice, but it was filled with smokers who could not smoke inside the stadium.

Hopefully you can make the drive next season to watch the Cubs%26#39; prospects. (or lack thereof)

Thanks for the update. I didn%26#39;t get there this season - hopefully next year.

best way to travel from Iowa City to Chicago by road?

No way by road to do that. There is Greyhound bus service but that takes absolutely forever and not always that safe if you ask me. Catching a flight from Cedar Rapids to Chicago is your best bet. I believe sometimes there are ride sharing forums through the University for people to arrange and share rides to Chicago, but I do not know where or how I heard about that.

    iowa over the thanksgiving holiday

My husband and I are thinking of driving from Indiana to visit our son who is going to college in central Iowa over the Thanksgiving holiday. Does anyone have suggestions for a great place to stay and eat for Thanksgiving? I am thinking of somewhere in the area of the Iowa City toward DesMoines region. Thanks!

    iowa over the thanksgiving holiday

Where exactly is your son going to school - that would make a big difference in where we might recommend. The Amana Colonies would be a great place to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

    iowa over the thanksgiving holiday

i was thinking about the amana colonies............do you think they would do a thanksgiving meal and which of the ';eateries'; do you recommend?

the Ox Yoke Inn in Main Amana is very good. Their meals are served family style. I would think they are open on Thanksgiving, but not sure. There website gives hours, but not holidays. You could just give them a call. Their website is simply oxyokeinn.com

thanks a million! i just got off the phone with the ox yoke inn and was able to secure reservations for thanksgiving day. it sounds perfect. i appreciate all of your help!

Thanks for the suggestion of the Oxyoke Inn. It was a perfect place to meet my son for THanksgiving dinner. The food was good and there was plenty of it for a starving college boy and 14 year old brother! Now we need to go back to the Amana Colonies when all of it is open. Thanks!

  • Which Holiday Inn Express?

Looking at HIE website, both CR locations have the same rate -- any opinions, good or bad, on these?

    We are 2 adults and 2 boys(9 and 11)

    Thanks

    Wendy

    Which Holiday Inn Express?

I am sure either would be fine, but what are you coming to CR for? The locations of each may make a difference as to which one you choose.

    Which Holiday Inn Express?

the one on collins road would be nearest to most of the shopping etc. Where as the one on 33rd Ave is kind of away from most of the main shopping/dining areas.

We%26#39;ll mostly be passing through, but will probably stop at the Science Station while we are there.

    Thanks

    Wendy

Thank you again -- we did go with Collins Road.

The Holiday Inn Exp on Collins Rd has been recently remodeled to the best of my knowledge.

  • Nice Place to Stay in Iowa City/Coralville

Need your opinions on the best place to stay in Iowa City/Coralville. Close to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics would be great, but not a requirement. Pool, Spa, Restaurant would be a plus also.

Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    RKD

Nice Place to Stay in Iowa City/Coralville

In economical terms your best bet would be to stay at the Heartland Inn. It is a typical no frills motel, and has a indoor pool. There is an Old Chicago next door and a number of other restaurants within walking distance. A plus for you would be that they offer a free shuttle to the UIHC, where parking can run a $1 an hour.

Nice Place to Stay in Iowa City/Coralville

    Thank you, mahlerssecond!

Would you stay somewhere else if $ was not an issue?

Coralville just opened a new Marriott in August. From what I have heard and seen it is a really nice place. Also a Comfort Suites and Holiday Inn Express have opened in the last couple of years near Coral Ridge Mall. Another option I would look into, would be the bed and breakfasts in Iowa City (My sister and brother-in-law stayed at the Brown Street Inn recently and enjoyed their experience.)

    Walking distance

Is the Holiday Inn at 6th Ave within walking distance to the Vets Auditorium?

Also, is there in restaurants near the Holiday Inn or shopping?

Thanks for your help. We will be coming to Des Moines from KC this weekend for a cheer competition. The weather is looking a little bleak. :(

    Walking distance

I would call the hotel directly to find out for sure, but most of the downtown hotels are connected by a skywalk system and are not far from vets

    Hello...Anybody out there....

Doesn%26#39;t seem that ther are any Des Moines experts that monitor this board too frequently.

Will be staying downtown this weekend at the Holiday Inn. I am looking for restaurant advice. Nothing too high end. Something teenagers and adults will both like.

    Hello...Anybody out there....

Here is a list of downtown DSM restaurants. It%26#39;s been a long time since I%26#39;ve lived there, so I have no idea about what you should pick.

    Church Trip

I am a youth director at my church and I was wondering if anyone had anything in mine to do in Iowa.

    Church Trip

Go to the Amana Colonies. Great working Amish community with lots of shops and restaurants. Close to Iowa City.

The new Mississippi Great River Museum is open in Dubuque.

I lived in Burlington Iowa and they now have Fun City, which is indoor amusement park (go-carts, lazer tag, video games, etc...) Indoor water park (outdoor in warmer weather.)

Where are you coming from? Contact First Christian Church in Burlington Iowa. They have a nice youth group, Pastor Tom Smith can give you other ideas for youth trips in Iowa.

    Good luck.

    Church Trip

The Amana Colonies are NOT Amish! Not even close.

I%26#39;m sorry, I may be mistaken on their religious background, but instead of yelling what they are not, please correct a post and state who founded the area.

I know many German immigrants are there, Is this the more appropriate description?

Sorry, I wasn%26#39;t ';yelling';, I was just shocked that someone who has lived in Iowa wouldn%26#39;t know this. You spoke as if you had been to the Amanas so I was very surprised when you linked these two completely different groups.

If you go to this link the nice folks in the Amanas will explain this misconception: http://www.amanacolonies.org/amish/index.html

Apparently enough people confuse this that they include an entire page of explanation on their website.

I%26#39;m just chuckling to myself now thinking of ';Amish'; refrigerators and other appliances for the home. :-)

  • Iowa City Lodging

Can someone please help me select a hotel in Iowa City, Iowa? I鈥檝e been trying to make up my mind by reading reviews on all the possibilities, but that鈥檚 made me more uncertain that I鈥檒l make a good choice! The ratings/reviews for the same hotel can be so vastly different!

It would be nice if it were close to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, but not absolutely necessary.

Price, amenities, etc., do not matter; just want some advise鈥?/p>

    Thanks!

    Iowa City Lodging

The Marriott in Coralville is brand new and in that respect should be considered. Easy access to UIHC by car. The Heartland Inn is even closer and very popular, especially on game days but I cannot vouch for its atmosphere or cleanliness as I have never stayed there. As far as downtown Iowa City, the Sheraton is on the pedestrian mall but from what I hear is overpriced for the age of the property but there is something to be said for being downtown near the University campus. It also has easy access to the UIHC. There are a few B%26amp;B%26#39;s very near to downtown (walking distance) with the feeling of a historic residential neighborhood. I have always wanted to try them or have a friend stay there to tell me about them. I would be happy to help with any further questions.

    Iowa City Lodging

The Marriot in Coralville is an excellent recommendation if you are a non smoker as the entire property is smoke free and it has only been open for less than a year.. It is very easy access as it is right off Interstate 80 at the First Ave exit. Proximity is not much of a problem anywhere as it is a very small metro area. Personally, I would stay away from the Heartland Inns as they are typically older more run down properties but that is just my opinion. There are always quality-price tradeoffs.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate your comments.

    Just returned from Des Moines

Stayed at the Holiday Inn at Mercy. The rooms were small. Especially the bathroom. The toilet was under part of the counter space. The beds were comfortable and the facility was clean. It was a typical HI.

We ate at the Racoon Brewing company on 10th and Mulberry. The atmosphere and food were excellent as was the service.

    Just returned from Des Moines

I%26#39;m not surprised, Mercy is not what I would consider downtown, and I%26#39;m sure the hotel caters to people who are in town to visit people in the hospital. Unless Mercy has moved or this was an offshoot, the hospital is sort of north of the downtown area.

  • Iowa State Fair

Are alot of you going to the fair? We have been going since 1956. It has expanded from mainly agricultural shows and exhibits to features for everyone. Come and see the old and the new, or just people watch.

    Iowa State Fair

We go to the State Fair almost every year. It is in Des Moines, which is 100 miles to the southwest of Waterloo. We love it.

    Walking Distance to Vet Auditorium

Is the Holiday Inn at 6th Ave within walking distance to the Vet Auditorium?

Also, are ther restaurants and shops in this area? We will be coming down this weekend from KC.

    Walking Distance to Vet Auditorium

It%26#39;s across the interstate from Vet%26#39;s. There are restaurants past Vets South on Court Avenue.

    Okoboji nightlife

About a dozen college buddies and I are trying to find a good place to have a reunion of sorts this summer, and the Lake Okoboji area is the leading candidate right now. But, we can%26#39;t find much information about what kind of nightlife the Okoboji area offers. Before we book the trip it%26#39;d be nice to know if there are plenty of nightlife options to choose from there. We%26#39;ve heard good stories about Okoboji and that there are good good bars and pubs but we can%26#39;t find much mention of them on any websites. Can anyone provide some info on the Okoboji Lakes area nightlife? Any opinions or favorite spots or general insights to the nightlife and party scene there would be helpful. All the websites and tourism magazines are understandably family-oriented, but that%26#39;s just not what we%26#39;re looking for. If we come down there this summer, it will be to unwind and have some fun. Any help out there? Thanks!! Chris, Minneapolis

    Okoboji nightlife

Arnolds Park is the center of Okoboji nightlife. I can%26#39;t really speak as to the quality or to specific places, but I can assure you that many people come to Okoboji just for the nightlife.

Some of the more popular places are the Ritz (on the water), Regal Beagle, and Captain%26#39;s Getaway. If you come on a weekend in the summertime, chances are you%26#39;ll find many watering hole packed. Your biggest concern is paying the cover charge or the wait to get in if you don%26#39;t arrive early...

    Okoboji nightlife

    Hello Chris

I grew up in the Okobji Area, and loved it. The night life is what I remember most. There are great bars such as the Ritz, Captains Getaway, Barefoot bar, and Whisky Dicks. You will have a blast at any of these locations. During the day alot of people head for Gull point. There is a wide range of ages on this beach, but everyone is always drunk!!!!! It is always the most croweded on the weekends, If you have access to a boat I would make a stop at the point. It%26#39;s location is on west lake. Also on west is the Emporium. There are many shops, but it is also the location of Whisky Dicks. You can Dock the boat there, and have a lot of bars within walking distance. The Ritz is located on East lake, and is known for thier fish bowls. Now barefoot bare is great during the day and night. It is located at Parks Marina, and is outside. The bar is in a grass hut on the patio right on the lake. The Ritz and Whisky Dicks both have outdoor drinking areas as well. I hope I helped, and have fun!!!!!!

  • Model Railroading in Bettendorf Iowa

If you like trains there is a must see stop in Bettendorf. The Midwest Trains Associates have a model railroad club layout attached to the Midwest Trains Hobby Shop. The Hobby Shop is located at 1114 State Street, Bettenderf Iowa.

The shop is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There is usually someone available to give a tour of the club.

The club layout occupies approximately 1800 sq ft of space. It has been in operation for 20 years and is quite detailed.

    Model Railroading in Bettendorf Iowa

During a business trip last week, I visited the Midwest Trains Hobby shop. A really nice layout with a lot of details. The owner was very friendly and gave us a layout tour. The John Deere factory buildings impressed me. Highly recomanded!

outdoor ice rink, downtown or west side

I am on the road to DM this coming week and was looking for an ice rink to get some a skating workout on. I prefer outdoors, but with a warming house..any chance I%26#39;d find one? thanks.

outdoor ice rink, downtown or west side

I don%26#39;t know about outdoor rinks, but there is an indoor one in Urbandale on Hickman. It%26#39;s where the minor league hockey teams plays.

outdoor ice rink, downtown or west side

Sorry, you probably have already been here, but there is a fantastic outdoor skating rink in downtown Des Moines, called Brenton Plaza. I believe it is around 2nd and Grand Ave. My son works there when he is home from college, and it%26#39;s been very popular since it opened this winter.

    Maybe next time...

    Camping

Can anyone recommend a good place for tent camping over a weekend near Dubuque. Hiking will be out main activity, but canoe rentals or other activities would be nice, too.

    Camping

Backbone State Park near Strawberry Point is excellent.

    Camping

Miller Park and Campground is good but may not be what you are looking for exactly. It is easy to find- Next to the Dubuque Casino. The Mississsippi River is within sight and the follow campers are great. I do not think there is canoe rental and it mostly large campers but the atmosphere is good.

There is a campground just to the south of Dubuque called Swiss Valley park. There is also a nature center there. It is owned by Dubuque County. You could try the Dubuque County website for more info.

We are not campers in general, but my son has camped there several times with his boyscout troop. The nature center is also a popular destination for school field trips.
