Deer or critters on roads at night

I am taking a lap around Iowa on my motorcycle and wondering if I need to worry about animals appearing from out of nowhere at night time. At sunset I will be around Dyersville to Maquoketa, then after dark taking 61 south to Fort Madison, then 2 east to I-35.

I never encountered animals on my trips TO Maquoketa from Davenport or Dyersville.

But it%26#39;s a large farm area out that way, so I would look out.

Mostly coons.

Speaking of motorcycles and Iowa...

I don%26#39;t see any postings about Anamosa or the National Motorcycle Museum.

Anyone been? Input??

Thanks. :o)

The National Motorcycle Museum is well worth your time to stop and visit! It is right on the main street through town. Also, if you are in to motorcycles, you have probably heard of J %26amp; P Cycles. Their main location (with showroom) is right on the edge of Anamosa on Hwy 151. Both have websites so you can check them out a little before your trip here.

Critters at night....depends on your luck. You definitely need to keep your eyes peeled for them, but you may be lucky and never see them too. Depending on the route you take from Dyersville to Maquoketa.....if using the ';back'; county roads (which are definitely more scenic) you will definitely want to be alert. However, if you are simply going to take hwy 20 to dubuque and then down 61 to maquoketa, you would have less chance of critter action.

Just out of curiosity, how you end up choosing Iowa to tour?

Thanks Iowagymmom... see my other reply on ';travelling thru Iowa';. :o)

Hi IAgymmom,

My Iowa ride is sanctioned by the Iron Butt Association, a group dedicated to long distance motorcycling. It%26#39;s called a Saddle Sore 1000, which is 1000 miles to be ridden within 24 hours. (Don%26#39;t choke, it%26#39;s entirely possible. I%26#39;ve done it many times, and it%26#39;s safe when done properly.) For this ride I chose to create an all-Iowa route, because we visit family in Des Moines every year and I like Iowa. I%26#39;ll be riding my bike out from California just so I can complete the Iowa 1000. And we%26#39;re going to squeeze in a visit to the State Fair too. How Iowa can you get? :)

As to my specific question, I am riding down the river from Lansing, then heading to Dyersville in order to avoid Dubuque (too many stoplights in Dubuque.) I had originally planned on taking 136 south to 64 east to 61 south. But after reading your post it seems I might be better off taking 20 east to 61 south (using some county roads behind the Dubuque airport.) Is that a good way to go to make good time and still minimize the critter factor? And do you have any knowledge of the rest of that ride, 61 south to Fort Madison and 2 west to Decatur City?

Thanks.
